Why is this important

EOPA Code Blue is committed to working with elected leaders to highlight the urgency for the Polluter Pays Climate Superfund

The Polluter Pays Climate Superfund protects taxpayers and communities by holding major fossil fuel companies accountable for the harm their products have caused communities. The policy requires the largest fossil fuel companies to pay proportionate fees based on their historical emissions, shifting the financial burden from taxpayers to polluters

This policy protects taxpayers by creating sustainable funding streams for critical projects to ensure communities are safer and more resilient, especially for disadvantaged communities that have disproportionately borne the impacts of the climate emergency. The Climate Superfund model applies the proven “polluter pays” policy principle to ensure the costs of the climate emergency are borne by the companies most responsible for the crisis.

Benefits for cities and counties

Cities, counties, school districts, and special districts face enormous climate-related costs and infrastructure challenges, making superfund legislation essential for municipal resilience without overwhelming local budgets. Municipal leaders nationwide are responding by passing supportive resolutions recognizing the importance of this legislation, with states from Vermont and New York enacting Climate Superfund policies, and communities from New Jersey to California already taking action. These initiatives provide cities with essential resources to implement climate adaptations that protect residents while holding major polluters financially accountable for their contributions to climate change.
